Launched on the back of the popularity of the booming Golf model, the Volkswagen Jetta was essentially the saloon/sedan version of that hatchback.
It had the same platform as the Golf but was longer due to the boot sticking out of the rear, pretty much everything else was the same about the car.
Over the years the design of the car switched from being a longer Golf to being a car of its own right with its own unique styling - although it does match up with the rest of the Volkswagen range.
Over the years the Jetta has gone by many other names under the Volkswagen brand in various regions around the world including:
- Atlantic
- Bora
- Vento
- Clasico
- Sagitar
Engine sizes on offer were roughly the same as the Golf though the Jetta lacked any GTI-type model until the GLI was introduced in 2011.
This GLI trim was part of the new stylish design that took the car away from being like the Golf and steered towards being seen as a stylish family car rather than a budget one.
Underneath the GLI models was a more advanced independent suspension setup for better comfort and performance as well as limited-slip-differentials for improved cornering while accelerating.
