If like many Americans you are a superlative fan of the not-so humble pickup truck - they’re seriously fancy these days - then you’ve undoubtedly looked at or seriously considered a Ram pickup. They come in 3 main variants in the 2021 model year, the 1500, 2500, and the 3500.

In the world of trucks, Ram had settled for the bronze medal in sales for many years, but as of 2019, they have been upgraded to the silver position with 633,694 units sold according to Statista. They remain behind the Ford F-Series, however, which remains the countries firm favorite.

2019 saw the Ram pickup enter its fifth generation, delivering a model with greater payload capacity (2,300lbs) even with a 225-pound overall weight reduction.

The tech in the Ram pickup is also moving quickly. The 2021 model has an optional trailer steering control feature to help when reversing a trailered Ram.

The Ram has historically been somewhat cheaper than some of its competitors, and they continue in 2021, with even the 2022 model-year Ram expected to land at only $30,000 or so as a starting price.

The latest generation gets engines ranging from 3.0L at the bottom end up to monstrous 6.7L Cummins Turbodiesel 6-cylinder beasts at the top. You have to get the Heavy Duty model to enjoy that particular engine.

Despite some people’s notions that US-brand trucks and cars aren’t as reliable as European models, the Ram 1500 actually scored a respectable 3.5 on RepairPal ratings.

It was actually top of the heap where trucks were concerned.
