Employing the company's signature boxer-engine/permanent four-wheel-drive layout is the Subaru Forester.

The first examples of the compact crossover SUV were introduced in 1997 and underneath the Japanese company used the Impreza as a platform.

It was brought in to compete with the successful Toyota RAV4 and the Honda HR-V which were both stealing customers away from other segments of the market.

Car buyers were quickly catching onto the benefits of crossover SUVs with the smaller ones gaining more and more technology over the years.

A crossover SUV is built on a similar platform to a normal non-SUV car so it doesn't have heavy off-road equipment but still boasts massive interior space.

The Forester was lifted slightly compared to its donor car and had a taller roof though thanks to its low profile boxer engine the center of gravity was better than its competitors.

Not only does a low center-of-gravity help a car handle well on and off the road it also helps score better safety ratings with test agencies.

This was one of the cars first success stories, it did not need a warning applied to it in the first-generation stating "risk of rollover" whereas similar vehicles in its class would.
