Running for only 5 years, the Dodge Nitro was one of the last compact SUVs released onto the market by a major automobile manufacturer.
Sales at first exploded in its first model year of 2007 to 75,000~ units sold that year but quickly deteriorated until it was discontinued in 2012.
The release of the Nitro came at the wrong time: fuel prices were fluctuating at the highest levels they ever have been and Americans were feeling the pinch from the financial crisis of 2008.
Not only that but car buyers were flocking to the new growing range of crossover SUVs such as the Dodge Journey that was lighter thanks to the off-road equipment being discarded.
Most car buyers wanted an SUV but didn't need to take it off-road so the evolution was naturally towards giving the customer what they wanted.
Dodge's sister brand Jeep was better at marketing that sort of car as well due to their long history of providing those sorts of cars.
Underneath the Nitro was the same platform used by several Jeep's like the Commander and Liberty, the problem was Dodge didn't have the right brand to push sales.
