The Mazda CX-5 is arguably one of the most celebrated and lauded compact crossover SUVs of its time, competing well against rivals such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, and Honda CR-V. With a starting price even in its newest 2022 model year form of just $27,475 for the Base trim, and a top-end price for the Turbo Signature trim starting at $40,225, it’s also one of the best-value crossovers.
The CX-5 was the first vehicle in Mazda’s range to showcase its now much-celebrated “Kodo” design language, an idea first demonstrated in the Shinari concept car in August 2010. The CX-5 was launched for production in 2012 for the 2013 model year, and has since enjoyed excellent feedback and sales worldwide.
Under the hood, you’ll find a 187-hp 4-cylinder engine as standard, but you also have an option to upgrade to the 250-hp turbocharged engine if you want faster acceleration. Both come with AWD as standard and are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that feels very precise and smooth.
True to its reputation, Mazda has also made the CX-5 one of the most fun crossovers to drive, and that’s no mean feat. It’s part of a longer-running idea for driving dynamics that Mazda has for many years referred to as “linear” dynamics. They even successfully applied this idea to some of their minivan designs, showing just how far it could be applied.
The CX-5 features simple but elegant exterior design, with no one or two features especially standing out. Instead, it enjoys a fairly harmonious, sculpted look that people genuinely appreciate for its refined nature. The main downsides that some owners have expressed are a low towing capacity of just 2,000-lbs, as well as the need to climb fairly high in the trim ladder before you get the really premium interiors.
None of these have held this plucky SUV back, however, as it continues to enjoy great popularity and applause.
