The Kia Sportage name can be traced back to the early 1990s when it was first used as a compact SUV.
In 2004 it was reclassified as a compact crossover SUV as it lost a lot of its ability to go off-road but on the plus-side reduced its weight and so improved its fuel economy.

Original Sportage's were built on the Mazda Bongo chassis until 2004 when the company switched to using its new partner's Hyundai Elantra as a donor.
Safety ratings for the first 2 versions of the SUV were poor with a 2008 example of the car used at the testing centre as an example of a car with a weak roof.
In 2010 as the third-generation model of the Kia Sportage entered showrooms the safety situation reversed and the car was awarded 5 out of 5 stars.
