From the mid-1980s through to 2019 the Ford Taurus was the American automobile manufacturer's flagship mid-size car.

The car sold very well during its first 20 years, appealing to many different buyers and most importantly the lucrative family car market.

Sales started to suffer shortly before the global recession of 2008 when car buyers had to rethink their buying habits and started to flock to SUVs like the Edge.

Crossover SUVs are built on the same chassis' used by normal cars like the Taurus but with additional room inside the body for cargo, passengers and safety/comfort features.

In 2007 the Ford Taurus was reclassified as a full-size car as the dimensions increased between the fourth and fifth-generation.

This did not go down well with buyers and sales halved overnight and never recorded again, instead Ford pushed potential customers to the Fusion model to take over.

The Taurus name does continue to live on to this day in China though, where a rebadged and stretched out Mondeo is sold under that nameplate.
