Originally the Toyota Yaris name can be traced back to the mini-MPV that was sold by the company in the late 1990s.

It was then used on the subcompact car that most of us will recognize as the Yaris, a very small and simple car design.

It was brought in to replace the small Starlet and Tercel cars that were experiencing increased competition and flagging sales.

The car was sold in almost every territory around the world with sales success in Europe and Japan where smaller cars are important due to the large net-importing of oil.

Various shapes of the car have been sold including the standard hatchback, a coupe and a sedan version with a boot extruding from the rear.

In some markets it was called the Echo, the Vitz, the Belta or even the Platz depending on the shape and level of trim.

Now the name is used on a subcompact crossover SUV called the Yaris Cross since 2020 which competes with similar cars like the Kia Soul.
