About Audi

Audi AG is a subsidiary of the gargantuan Volkswagen group, but it wasn’t always the case. Headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany, Audi continues to produce its eclectic range of luxury sedans, SUVs and sports cars, and have now also branched firmly into electric models with their e-tron electric SUVs.

The name “Audi” comes from the Latin translation of their founder’s surname. The founder was August Horch, and Horch means “listen” in German, or “audi” in Latin. It was formed as a company through a merger of 4 smaller firms, denoted by the 4 rings in the iconic and globally recognized and respected Audi logo.

Recent figures show that this luxury brand produces about 1.8 million units annually, and maintains an assets portfolio of around €67 billion, employing some 91,000 people around the world.

While most young buyers recognize Audi most for its line of “Q” series SUV models, others were brought into the Audi fan fold by one of the many Audi “A” series of luxury sedan models that had been around decades prior to any SUVs.

Cars like the Audi A4 and A6 have long been seen as the brand’s flagship models, offering impressive engine power and performance, AWD capabilities with the “Quattro” system, and finely appointed and comfortable interiors. What’s more, these cars wouldn’t cost as much as other German luxury models like Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, the latter of which is also owned by VW.

Key technologies that have helped keep Audi cars as top sellers around the world include their AI-driven driver-assist technologies, the Audi Virtual Cockpit which has taken away many central touchscreens and put everything in the driver’s view behind the wheel. Another is the Quattro AWD system that helps all types of Audi cars improve traction and on-road performance.

Audi also offers the high-specification “S” and “RS” lines of their vehicle series, so the Audi A4 becomes the S4, for example. These are akin to BMW’s development of its “M” series cars.
